Little Narberth Museum nominated for big arts prize

Located in Pembrokshire, Narberth Museum was forced to close in 2003 after the sale of its home. Thanks to the work of perseverant volunteers who raised funds during eight years, the little museum reopened last summer. Surprisingly, the little museum, which celebrates the history of the Welsh Market town, is one of the 10 finalists for the £100,000 Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year, UK's richest arts award.

It is phenomenal, I can't believe it, said Narbeth's curator Pauline Griffiths to The Guardian. We were absolutely delighted an not a little amazed when we heard the news. We are a small community museum, there are lots of us all over the country and maybe we're there representing them. It is such a nice stamp of approval for us.

In reference to the 9-year campaign to reopen the museum, Griffiths said: We had amassed quite a nice collection and we didn't want it to be dispersed or destroyed so we decided to come back in some shape or form, Griffiths said. It took us nine years, a lot longer than expected.

It took them a long time, but campaigners finally managed to convince the Welsh government and the Heritage Lottery Fund to give money to reopen the museum. Subsequently, Narberth Museum was reopened in a building called The Bonded Stores, which was used for a century by the firm of James Williams Ltd to store booze duty free until it was sold on. I suppose you could say the cloud had a silver lining but it took a long time to show, said Griffiths.

With four part-time staff and 30 volunteers, the museum reopened with no regular funding and it relines on the income it generates. We are a very different animal to the big beasts on the list, said Griffiths. Therefore, winning the prize could really translate into a turning point for the little museum's finances.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony which will take place at the V&A in London on June 4th. Stephen Deuchar, The Art Fund's director said: The quality and diversity of the UK's museum galleries is truly exceptional and the job of this prize is to draw attention to that.

He added: As the national charity for art, we hope that, by shining a light on the 10 finalists, we'll encourage people to visit and celebrate these bright beacons of culture across the UK.

The prize rewards the very best curatorial and programming in British museums. Las year, the prize was won by the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter.

Roskilde Festival 2013

Roskilde Festival 2013

Roskilde Festival 2013

Each summer, Northern Europe's largest culture and music festival rocks Roskilde for four consecutive days in June. The festival was founded in 1971 and it offers quality experiences based on modern music and creative kinship.

The Caribbean superstar, Rihanna, will deliver an explosive pop party, while the American band The Lumineers will take their stomp-and-clap rock at Roskilde Festival this year. One of today's biggest stars in R&B, pop and hiphop, Rihanna will bring dance moves, sex appeal and inescapable choruses to the Nordic summer night.

Meanwhile, The Lumineers are conquering the world. Even Marcus of Mumford & Sons has praised The Lumineers and confessed they are a personal favourite. Their melodic tunes like Ho Hey and Wesley Schultz' voice are a blissful delight.

The complete lineup is yet to be announced but so far rock-oriented bands like Queens of the Stone Age, Slipknot and Volbeat have been confirmed. However, the Festival once and again surprises everyone in the end. Mythical artists like Bob Marley, Talking Heads, U2, Metallica and Radiohead have played in Roskilde, which shows the festival's outreach and what we can expect from this year's lineup.

Roskilde Festival is also a non-profit organisation which shows concern towards environmental issues, humanitarian causes and cultural work. The event reflects a boundary-pushing cultural-political manifestation. It is based on the efforts of unpaid workforce who focus on audience service, quality, creativity and safety. Ultimately, all profits from Roskilde Festival are donated to humanitarian and cultural work.

The 2013 Roskilde Festival Arts programme has not been announced yet, but certainly there will be great art installations, super performances and works of art that visitors can be part of creating.

Sea Sessions Surf Music festival

Sea Sessions Surf Music festival

Surfing, music, skating, partying... Whoo hoo! Sea Sessions festival has it all for a high-powered experience. The event will take place from 21st to 23rd June this year in Bundoran, Co. Donegal, Ireland. Fat Freddys Drop, Xavier Rudd and Bastille will headline the event.

This year Sea Sessions celebrates its 6th anniversary Europe's best surf, skate and music festival. Sea Sessions is the only festival of its kind and presents an original combo, offering party goers a surfer spin, combined with the love of awesome music.

Daniel Browne, festival organiser says Musically we are really going back to our roots here. This is a big beach party and we want to make sure the music reflects that fun loving happy life by the beach kind a thing we have going on. There is a fairly eclectic mix of music in the line up but it all has one thing in common, it's quality. I remember a friend asking me once ‘well what kind of music do surfers like' and I couldn't answer as there isn't really a surfer genre of music, there's surfers that like drum and bass and surfers that love rock so we try and make sure the line up is as diverse the people coming to enjoy it.

Excitement builds up with the announcement of Bastille as headliners of the festival. The band has had a successful and busy time of late, with a number one album in the UK, a sold-out UK and Irish tour and have also been ranking high in the Irish charts.

To attend, weekend tickets are 89 euros, and weekend tickets with camping included are 99 euros.

Festival's booker and organiser Ray ‘Razor' O'Donoghue commented: We're really excited about the line-up this year. We've got New Zealand's seven piece and one of the finest Live acts out there, Fat Freddy's Drop, who play a mix of Reggae with Funk and even a hint of Electronica, plus from the same end of the world Australian Xavier Rudd. Not only is he a surfer but his mix of acoustic tunes and multi instruments have us very excited. He's a big hit on the festival circuit and we can't wait to see his live show. Closer to home Bastille are the one that are on everyone's lips. Their version of Indie Pop is obviously popular. A number one album in the UK is testament to that.

Along with the headliners there are loads of interesting acts. The Milk -who play a kind of UK Soul-, Soak -singer songwriter- and The Strypes. I just love their sound. It's like early Rolling Stones and Yard Birds with serious guitar playing. I think Weller and Dave Grohl have been name checking them so another up and coming. continued Razor.

Other Irish acts include Le Galaxie, Foy Vance, Duke Special, Frank and Walters and festivals classic The Minutes. International artists like Ben Caplan, William Adamson and Ayah Marar rock the event.
